Whether you’re taking your very first steps as a trustee or already have some experience, our supportive, in-person courses help you build both the theory and the practical skills you need to feel confident in your role. Each course is tailored to meet you where you are and help you grow throughout your time as a trustee. 

Our trustee training courses guide you through the role, responsibilities and common challenges trustees face. With the support of legal and financial pensions experts, you’ll work through real-life scenarios that help you feel prepared for the decisions you make on behalf of your members. 

You’ll explore: 

• The key components of good scheme governance and how to manage risks 
• How to exercise your duties, responsibilities and powers 
• What effective trustee decision-making looks like in practice 
• Key principles to consider when making investment decisions. 

By the end of the course, you’ll feel more confident, capable, and ready to engage positively with employers, administrators, advisers and members. 

Come together with your peers 

All our training takes place face to face (parts 2 and 3 at our London office, part 1 in several places around the country), giving you the chance to learn alongside fellow trustees, ask questions in a safe space, and build supportive connections. Many attendees tell us that meeting peers - people with similar challenges and responsibilities - is one of the most valuable parts of the experience.

Trusteeship – part 1: the theory 

Designed for new trustees or those with up to six months’ experience, part 1 takes you through how pension schemes work, what’s expected of you, and how to apply good scheme governance. 

In 2026, part 1 will take place in London, Leeds, Liverpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Trusteeship – part 2: the practice

Aimed at trustees with more than six months experience and who have attended a few trustee board meetings, part 2 gives you the chance to put your growing knowledge into action.  

Through boardroom simulations and guided discussions, you’ll practise how to approach the real issues you’re likely to face in the role. You will need a gap of at least six months from completing part 1 before part 2.  

Part 2 takes place at our office in London.

Designed for trustees who have been in the role for several years and would welcome a refresher, part 3 helps you to refine your skills and deepen your impact as a trustee through exploring the challenges experienced trustees often encounter.
