Trusteeship - part 1: the theory

Build the essentials of confident, good-governance trusteeship

Starting your trustee journey is an exciting step, and we’re here to make sure you feel confident and supported every step of the way.

Part 1 of our trustee training is designed for new trustees and those with less than six months’ experience. You’ll learn how pension schemes work, what you need to succeed, and how to apply good governance in a practical, approachable way.

Being a trustee is an incredibly rewarding experience. Part 1 of our trustee training course guides you through the fundamentals of your new role in a supportive, in-person session alongside people at the same stage as you, by the end of which you’ll feel equipped and confident to make a positive impact.

“A lot of content, very well delivered by engaging presenters”

“Kate made all content accessible to grasp, regardless of your background/prior knowledge”

“The support material provided has been invaluable and I will certainly use these when I return to office”

What you'll learn

Our legal and financial experts share their knowledge and unpick difficult topics, they will also bring to life The Pensions Regulator’s trustee toolkit.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Feel confident in your role, with an understanding of the key duties, responsibilities, and powers of pension trustees
  • Practically safeguard yourself as a trustee against legal challenges, giving you peace of mind
  • Understand the key advisers who support trustees and appreciate the value of their guidance
  • Understand how pension schemes are funded and how DB schemes assess their assets and liabilities
  • Examine the main considerations for making informed, thoughtful decisions about investing your pension scheme’s assets
  • Recognise the essential governance activities that help ensure strong and effective scheme management.

Come together with your peers

All our training takes place face to face.

New for 2026, we’re taking part 1 on the road and dates are available across the UK in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, and London.

The Edinburgh and Liverpool dates take place on the first day of our Investment and Annual Conferences respectively. Attend Trustee Training to maximise your learning and, if you're attending the conference, continue your development at these incredible events (conferences are free to attend for fund, local government and master trust members).

Our training also gives you the chance to learn alongside fellow trustees, ask questions in a safe space, and build supportive connections. Many attendees tell us that meeting peers - people facing similar challenges and responsibilities - is one of the most valuable parts of the experience.

Developing your skills further

After completing part 1 and gaining more experience in your role (typically over a six-month period), we recommend taking part 2, which gives you the chance to put your growing knowledge into action. Through boardroom simulations and guided discussions, you’ll practise how to approach the real issues you’re likely to face in the role.
